2018 will start with a brilliant New Year’s Day Supermoon

2017 might have been a terrible year for some, but for astronomy lovers it was great, with a total solar eclipse and plenty of cosmic goings-on. It looks like in 2018 the skies will be just as busy, kicking off with a supermoon on the first day of the year.

These massive-looking full moons are truly beautiful, and capturing one on camera is the end goal for many a sky-watcher. We’ve been treated to three supermoons in a row, with the first one being at the start of December. However, you can still catch the next two.

What is a supermoon? A supermoon is a full moon that appears to be much bigger than usual. This is because the moon orbits the earth in a an oval shape rather than a circle, making it closer to the earth at some points. Every 29.5 days when it reaches the closes point to the earth this is known as a perigee. Now and again, this perigee will also fall at the same time as a full moon. There are no effects of a supermoon but it looks mesmerising in the sky, appearing around 14% bigger and 30% brighter than your average full moon. Depending on where it is on the horizon it can look even larger, in a trick of the eyes called ‘the moon illusion’.

When are January’s supermoons? We have two supermoons this month, with the first falling on New Year’s Day – this is nicknamed the wolf moon. Then, on January 31st, the so-called blue moon will arrive, which is also a supermoon.

Kangana Ranaut to Kapil Sharma: Four Bollywood careers that took a nosedive in 2017

Four stars -- Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan, Kapil Sharma and Shraddha Kapoor -- found the going tough in 2017. Here’s what went wrong and what 2018 holds for them.

YEAR ENDER 2017 Updated: Dec 30, 2017 11:17 IST
Sweta Kaushal
The films of Kangana Ranaut, Kapil Sharma, Shraddha Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan failed to deliver in 2017.
The films of Kangana Ranaut, Kapil Sharma, Shraddha Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan failed to deliver in 2017.
It has been a cruel year. While Bollywood has had a meh year with Tiger Zinda Hai coming as one of the few reasons to cheer about for the trade, some actors have had more difficult than the years. Here are four stars who had more bad news than good and need to pull up their socks for 2018.
Kangana Ranaut

Post Queen, only Tanu Weds Manu Returns worked for Kangana Ranaut.
Kangana Ranaut has been in the news for all of 2017. With two releases - Rangoon and Simran - that was to be expected. However, what gave the top of mind recall value were her run-ins with powerful faces in Bollywood such as Hrithik Roshan and Karan Johar.
While controversies dogged her every step, it was her career that took a drubbing. Both her films that released this year failed to perform well at the box office. It has becomes something of a pattern with her. Post Queen (2014), the actor was seen as one of the top female actors in the industry. However, since then she has had seven releases and only one film (Tanu Weds Manu Returns) registered profits.
With her series of interviews calling out the biggest celebs in the industry (Karan Johar and Hrithik Roshan), Kangana has confessed that her image and work has taken a hit. Currently, she is working on a biopic of Rani Lakshmibai called Manikarnika which was originally supposed to be directed by Ketan Mehta. However, the film is being directed by Krish and the actor plans to plunge into production with her next movie.
Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan’s film was a remake of Jon Favreau’s Chef.
Saif Ali Khan has starred in films like Hum Tum, Omkara, Dil Chahta Hai and Go Goa Gone, which made him one of most sought after actors in the industry. However, his past few releases have been rather disappointing. In fact, his last box office hit was Sajid Khan’s Humshakals (2014) and that is a rare hit film where almost all stars disowned the film after critics widely panned it for its regressive content. In the past one year, Saif was seen in the period drama, Rangoon, and Raja Krishna Menon’s remake of Jon Favreau’s Chef. Both films failed to impress, registering losses at the ticket windows.
Kapil Sharma

Despite Kapil Sharma’s efforts, Firangi turned out to be tedious and monotonous.
It has been a year of controversies for the erstwhile TV star. It all started with an infamous fight with his co-star Sunil Grover in March during which Kapil allegedly threw a shoe at him. The TV ratings of his show, The Kapil Sharma Show, plummeted and speculation about him cancelling the shooting of his shows after making stars wait for hours emerged. By August, Kapil had cancelled shoots seven times with A-list Bollywood celebs, including Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn, for a variety of reason. The show was later pulled off air and Kapil cited health reasons for it. His second Bollywood outing, Firangi, proved to be a box office dud and failed to impress critics as well.
Shraddha Kapoor

Haseena Parkar was an unmitigated disaster.
She is one of the few top actors in Bollywood who had three major releases in 2017. While Shaad Ali’s Ok Jaanu received flak from critics and earned mere Rs 21 crore at the box office, Mohit Suri’s adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s Half Girlfriend did comparatively better but earned no brownie points for its main leads.
Apoorva Lakhia’s Haseena Parkar was being touted as one of the biggest films of her career, and the focus being Shraddha’s character Haseena, it could have been her vehicle to the top slot. Unfortunately, not only did the film fail to bring the audience to the theatres with a dismal collection of Rs 6 crore, Shraddha was panned widely for over-the-top performance and her accent.
While Kapil has his TV show to look forward to, Kangana can bank upon Manikarnika while Kaalakandi might be Saif Ali Khan’s turning point. Shraddha Kapoor, on the other hand, may re-launch her career if Saaho works in her favour. Only time will tell.

Mariah Carey's New Year's Eve Performance, Sound Check Mandatory

EXCLUSIVE
Mariah Carey is in Aspen with BF Brian Tanaka, but she'll be leaving for The Big Apple the next day ready to prep for round 2 of Dick Clark's Rocin' New Year's Eve ... and this time there's a plan to avert disaster.
TMZ broke the story ... Maria and Dick Clark Productions struck a deal where she'll come back and perform just before midnight on Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve broadcast on ABC.
TMZ broke a series of stories after last year's disaster, where Mariah claimed she couldn't hear the music through her earpiece.  A war erupted, with Dick Clark's people claiming the system worked fine ... the real problem was that Mariah didn't want to be bothered with a full-on sound check.  She had a stand in for part of it, and that, DCP claims, was the source of the problem.

Italian company 'Steve Jobs' wins trademark battle against Apple

An Italian clothing company called "Steve Jobs" won a trademark battle against Apple and can now use the iPhone creator's name and apple-inspired logo on whatever they please.

Two Italian brothers, Vincenzo and Giacomo Barbato, noticed that Steve Jobs' name wasn't trademarked in 2012, so they decided to use the name for their company, Business Insider Italia reported. For years, Apple has legally fought the brothers over their logo, which features a J that looks like an apple with a bite out of it. Ring any bells? Yeah, Apple's logo features an apple with a bite out of it.

The brother's told Business Insider a judge ruled that because it's a letter, "it can not be a bite," mirrored after the Apple logo.

While the European Union Intellectual Property Office registered the name for the Italian designers in 2014, the brothers only recently registered the name globally, Business Insider reported.

While the duo already make jeans with "Steve Jobs" emblazoned on the label, they say the brand was "born absolutely for electronics."

That means a "Steve Jobs" smartphone might be coming your way.

5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOUR XBOX ONE COULD DO

5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOUR XBOX ONE COULD DO

MICROSOFT
MICROSOFT'S XBOX ONE isn't the most popular gaming console, but it's still as relevant as ever. If you're new to the Xbox, there are plenty of awesome features you might not know exist. That's why we've put together this list of tips to help you get the most from your gaming system.

Plug It In

Since the Xbox is, underneath it all, a Microsoft-made computer, it has some features similar to a normal PC. That means you can easily use its three USB 3.0 ports to add accessories to your console. The most popular reason to use the Xbox's USB ports is to add an external hard drive for storing more games. The Xbox operating system makes it super easy to set up external storage, and you can move whatever content you want onto your USB hard drive painlessly.
But, did you know you could also plug in a USB webcam to use with Skype and Mixer streaming? Yep, it's true! Added recently, this functionality will let you video chat with friends or stream yourself playing games to your followers.
Another little-known USB add-on is a TV tuner. If your TV doesn't have a hookup for a coaxial antenna, then your Xbox can act as your digital receiver in a snap. Just buy one of the compatible Hauppage USB tuners and plug your antenna in. It's perfect for cord-cutters who also want to watch sports on the big broadcast channels. This way, your OTA TV and streaming services all come from one source, and the Xbox One even lets you pause live TV in case you have to answer the door.

Record and Share

The Xbox One lets you record your greatest gaming exploits and easily share them to your friends and followers online. The Xbox One X can even record game footage at 4K. (Other Xboxes record in HD, which is still great.) It's not hard to accomplish, either—after you've done something amazing, press the Xbox button on the controller and press X. That'll capture the last 30 seconds of gameplay.
If you want a continuous stream of footage, before you start playing, press the Xbox button, then the menu button (it's the one on the right beneath the Xbox with three lines on it). Select "Start Recording" and it'll begin rolling! If you're recording to the internal hard drive, you can capture ten minutes of footage. If you're recording to the external hard drive you plugged in, clips can be up to an hour long. Got a Kinect or a headset with a microphone connected to your controller? Just tell Cortana to "Capture That."
Now, to share, you've got a few options. Without any apps, you can upload to social networks, or to Microsoft's OneDrive cloud service. You can even upload your clip to YouTube using the Xbox's YouTube app.

Play 4K Content

The original Xbox One doesn't have this ability, but if you have an Xbox One S or Xbox One X, you can play 4K HDR content from a number of sources. First, both newer Xboxes feature an HDMI 2.0 port—necessary for output in resolutions above 1080p. Streaming content from Amazon, Netflix, and even YouTube can be enjoyed in 4K (although, only on the Xbox One X for now). What's even more appealing is that both S and X owners can also play 4K Blu-ray movies thanks to those consoles' built-in 4K Blu-ray drives.

Controller Double-Life

The ordinary Xbox One controller has a secret feature that lets it cheat on your console. Using a USB cable or Bluetooth (on controllers that are newer), you can easily use the Xbox One gamepad with any Windows PC. If you want to use controllers wirelessly, there's even an affordable USB adapter Microsoft makes that works really well. Here's another pro tip: newer Xbox One controllers also have a standard headphone jack on the bottom, so you can game or stream without disturbing anyone.

Only a Stream Away

Got a PC running Windows 10? Fire up the Xbox app and stream from your Xbox One to your computer. Unfortunately, you can only stream to a computer on your own home network—for example, if your Xbox is in the living room, and you're on your laptop in the bedroom. However, it means you could have an Xbox in your home that isn't even connected to a TV or monitor, and only serves to stream to a PC for gaming. This is where connecting an Xbox One controller to your PC is mandatory.

A terrorist attack targeted a Christian church south of Cairo Friday, killing at least nine people, Egyptian officials say. The assailant was apprehended after a gun battle that killed at least one police officer.
Initial reports said that two gunmen were involved; the government has since provided an update, saying that the lone attacker is in custody, and that the violence played out at two locations.
"Egypt's interior ministry says a gunman killed at least two people at a shop. They were identified by Egypt's Coptic church as Christians," NPR's Daniel Estrin reports. "The interior ministry says the gunman then tried to break through a security checkpoint in front of a church. He opened fire, killing a policeman and at least six others whom the Coptic church identified as church members."
Despite the death toll, the state news agency MENA is calling the attack a foiled attempt; Egyptian media report that along with guns, the assailants were also carrying explosives, suggesting that the violence could have been far worse.
The violence centered on the Mari Mina Church, in the city of Helwan on the southern outskirts of Cairo, east of the Nile River.
The attack comes amid heightened security, as Egyptian Christians, who are roughly 10 percent of the country's population, prepare to celebrate the Orthodox Christmas, which is observed one week into the new year.
Earlier this week, Egypt's Ministry of Defense said that it's mobilizing part of the armed forces to help provide security for Christmas celebrations.
The U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued a tweet saying it "strongly condemns today's terrorist attack on a church."
The statement continued, "We offer condolences to the families of the victims and wishes for speedy recovery for those wounded. The U.S stands steadfastly with the people of Egypt in the face of such cowardly attacks."

Officials: Deadly NYC Fire Lit By Child Playing With Stove

Officials: Deadly NYC Fire Lit By Child Playing With Stove

 Updated on
New York (AP) -- New York City's deadliest residential fire in decades was accidentally lit by a 3 ½-year-old boy playing with the burners on his mother's stove, officials said Friday.
The flames spread quickly through the kitchen, then roared through a door the boy's mother had left open as she fled her first floor apartment with her two children, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. A stairwell acted like a chimney, carrying the flames through the entire building within minutes and blocking the main escape route.
Twelve people died, including girls ages 1, 2 and 7 and a boy whose age was not given.
"We were told the boy had a history of playing with the burners and turning them on, and before the mother knew it, this fire had gotten a good hold of the kitchen," Nigro said.
Many residents of the building were able to flee via fire escapes. At least 20 people were clambering down the icy, metal escapes when firefighters arrived, Nigro said.
Excluding the Sept. 11 attacks, it was the deadliest fire in the city since 87 people were killed at a social club fire in the same Bronx neighborhood in 1990.
The blaze broke out on the first floor of a five-story building just before 7 p.m. and quickly tore through the roughly century-old structure near the Bronx Zoo.
Some tenants of the building, a mix of native New Yorkers and Latino and African immigrants, climbed down fire escapes. But the flames moved so fast that many never made it out of their apartments.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
About 170 firefighters worked in bone-chilling cold, just 15 degrees, to rescue about a dozen people from the building.
Thierno Diallo, 59, a security guard originally from Conakry, Guinea, who lives in a ground floor apartment said he was asleep when he heard banging on the door. It took him a moment to realize what was happening.
"Only when I heard people screaming, 'There's a fire in the building!'" he said. "I heard somebody, 'Oh! Fire! Fire! Fire!'"
He ran outside in his bathrobe, jacket and sandals.
Kenneth Kodua, 37, said he left his apartment to get food, leaving his roommate behind, and came back to find people fleeing in a panic.
Hours later, he was still trying to find out whether his roommate had escaped.
"I tried calling her. I tried calling. No answer," he said, still clutching his bag of uneaten food. His phone was dead.
Many questions remained in the immediate aftermath of the blaze, including how the fire spread so quickly in a brick building built after catastrophic fires at the turn of the 20th century ushered in an era of tougher enforcement of fire codes.
The building had more than 20 units. It was not new enough that it was required to have modern-day fireproofing, like sprinkler systems and interior steel construction.
Witnesses described seeing burned bodies being carried away on stretchers and young girls who had escaped standing barefoot outside with no coats.
Twum Bredu, 61, arrived in the neighborhood looking for his brother, who had been staying with a family in the building. The family, a husband and wife and four children, got out. But there was no word about his brother.
"I've been calling his phone, it's ringing, but nobody picks up," Bredu said. "He was in his room, and we don't know what happened."
The death toll surpassed the 10 who died, including nine children, in a four-story home in another part of the Bronx in
2007. That blaze had been sparked by a space heater.
